Catch the Chicken
The sound of hammers striking metal, combined with the fumes from the forge, was not doing wonders for Lugor's growing headache.
"Can't we move on to making weapons and armour yet?" Jax grumbled as he finished another horseshoe. "Why are we making horseshoes? We don't even have horses!"
"I've told you a hundred times," Lugor sighed, rubbing his temples. "We don't have enough ore, you haven't hit the right level, and making high-quality, easily craftable items is the fastest way to get you there."
"But-"
"Jax," Lugor said sternly. "If I hear you complain one more time, I'm going to throw the horseshoe Darren just made directly at your head." Garrol's teaching techniques had rubbed off on the young half-orc. Praise and encouragement were good, but Lugor was quickly discovering that physical violence was immensely more satisfying.
Jax scoffed. "I doubt you'd really-"
Thunk.
"Ow!"
"I did warn you," Lugor said, watching the noble-turned-guard-turned-apprentice Blacksmith rubbing the red welt on his forehead.
"I've finished my hundred," Agda said to him, presenting her day's work.
Lugor gave her a smile. "Good work. Tidy up your station and go take a break before we head to the mine." He liked Agda. She was one of the dwarves from Magnus's worker force whoâd volunteered to learn Smithing and Mining from him. She followed instructions well, but Lugor could tell she had a fierceness to her. Agda had also volunteered herself to pick up the Fighter class from one of the remaining scrolls.
"Maybe Blacksmithing isn't for me," Jax said glumly. He looked at the work he'd done compared to Agdaâs and there was a clear difference in quality.
"You've only been doing it for a week, and you've made some great progress," Lugor said, laying a comforting hand on the guardâs shoulder. "My mentor didn't even let me touch metal for six months; I spent half a year cleaning the place before he decided I was worthy enough."
"He sounds like a hardass."
"Best teacher I ever had." Lugor grinned. "We're meant to head out in thirty minutes; finish off another three and then get your gear."
On top of teaching the Blacksmith profession, he was also in charge of helping get the new Adventurers levelled and skilled up in the dungeon he and Shiva had found. The guards were a couple levels ahead of the volunteers from the worker force, and a friendly rivalry was already emerging between the two groups. The guards only had a head start due to their having fought and killed a few monsters during their time under Darren, the experience gained sitting dormant âtil they received a class.
Lugor had decided he'd take his students each time he went out so he could help them level up their Mining skill. All the tutoring he'd been doing had done wonders for his Mentor skill, bringing it up to level two over the course of the week.
He left the smoky forge and stepped outside, taking a deep breath of fresh air. Sniffing at his clothes, he grimaced. He'd have to wash them soon, they absolutely reeked of smoke and soot.
